Stories from the Animal Liberation Movement — A recap
Hello everyone! So writing with some really good news, on May 6th at the Red and Black Cafe in Portland, OR the very first official fundraiser kicked off the start of the tour schedule! The event was organized by OTC Team members and was attended by dozens of awesome folks from the Portland Animal Rights community! Lots of familiar faces came out, as well as some new people who are just starting to get involved in animal rights activism. The whole night was a really fun and low-key affair with lots of laughter, crowd participation, and even some costumes. (cont’ below)
The basic premise of the event was to come together and share stories of above-ground activism within the community, and also give everyone a much needed break for the usual serious campaigning work that can often leave people depleted or burned out. By telling stories, individuals are able to bond with one and other over the work that we share, and also able to laugh at the folly that can sometimes arise from having to deal with police, shop owners, passer’s by, otheractivists, and sometimes even the elements themselves (how many of us have found ourselves leafleting in pouring rain, or the signs being torn from our hands by wind?)
Connecting with each other is a great way to confirm that we are all in this together, and we all care just the same; stories are the way that we share our lives with people, so what better way to connect with our community than to share and laugh together? This event did that and then some. All of the feedback has been tremendous and we are so thankful for everyone who came out and showed their support, not just for the tour, but for activism and total liberation as well.
